- On the 16th-c. polychromed marble pavements in Florence Cathedral. Proposes that these monumental pavements represent a reaction against the Gothic style and reveal an attempt to "classicize" the church. Focuses on the octagonal choir pavement probably commissioned by the Medici family in the early 1520s. Establishes (from documents) the chronology of its ideation and execution, analyzes its geometrical and illusionistic design and tentatively attributes it to Michelangelo. Points to the mosaic pattern in the dome of the Florentine Baptistery and the coffered dome of Pantheon in Rome as close visual models.
