Examines the importance of Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin's Gothic-revival design for Mount Saint Bernard Abbey (1840-1844) to the development of a 19th-c. international monastic style and the revival of catholicism in England. Discusses the influence of French monastic design on Pugin and comments on the project's patron, Ambrose Phillipps de Lisle, and the involvement of the French historian Charles-Forbes-René, comte de Montalembert.
