Abstract (en)

Examines the use of cross-dressing in three plays by William Shakespeare (Twelfth night, Cymbeline, and The two gentlemen of Verona) and the depiction of the cross-dressed characters from these plays in late-18th-/early 19th-c. engraved prints (after paintings) that were hung in London's Shakespeare Gallery. Explores how the illustrations can influence the interpretation of the texts, especially with respect to understanding issues of gender, gender identity, and male and female characterization. Analyzes prints by Thomas Burke (after William Hamilton), Thomas Gaugain (after Richard Westall), Luigi Schiavonetti (after Angelica Kauffmann), and Francesco Bartolozzi (after William Hamilton).
