Reviews the exhibition John Koch: painting a New York life (New York, New York Historical Society, 16 Oct 2001-27 Jan 2002). Discusses Koch's realist paintings of his Manhattan social circle, of artists and models in the studio and elegant cocktail parties. Also comments on the visual clues to Koch's probable homosexuality.
