Examines an Italian low bowl (1545) in the Detroit Institute of Arts depicting Daniel being awoken by an angel. Focuses on the location and date of production of the bowl, its inscription, and the influence of secular texts on the work. Michelangelo's drawing, Il Sogno (1532-1533, Courtauld Institute Gallery, London) has been recognized as the inspiration for the work, but dissemination of the theme is attributed to a number of 16th-c. paintings and engravings.
