Explores the establishment of the civic ritual of the Immaculate Conception in 16th-c. Siena. Considers the role of the city's two Dominican convents, and of prominent widow Margherita Bichi, in the development of the feast. Discusses the development of imagery of the Madonna della Misericordia as protectress of Siena appearing along wtih depictions of the city featuring the Porta Camollia, site of a battle that took place in 1526, considering a procession banner and a woodcut frontispiece in particular.
