Examines the popular and critical reception of the international tour of the 1955 photography exhibition The family of man, organized by Edward Steichen for the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Focuses on the photographic documentation of the exhibition by the United States Information Agency and how the tour was used in United States cultural diplomacy. Comments on the criticism of Roland Barthes.
