Examines the use in museum exhibitions of imagery from mass media spectacles, focusing on imagery from the 9/11 terrorist attacks in the exhibition September 11: bearing witness to history (Washington, DC, Smithsonian National Museum of American History, Sept 2002-12 Jan 2003). Discusses reception and argues that this type of exhibition simply duplicates the meaning found in the mass media, instead of examining it. Compares the Smithsonian exhibition to earlier examples of exhibitions that focused on media spectacle, specifically the 1993 Whitney Biennial, which featured a video of the Rodney King beating.
