Abstract
(en)
Broadly surveys the development of etching as a printmaking technique, and focuses on works by painters experimenting with the new medium. Asks what motivated painters to take up etching, and examines how their printwork differs from or resembles their work as painters as well as how it is different from the work of other printmakers. Discusses painter-etchers as artist-authors (both designers of and executers of prints).
