Discusses John Singer Sargent's copies after paintings by Diego Velázquez in the Prado, executed in 1879 on a visit to Madrid. Relates these studies to Sargent's artistic education and to his later works, particularly his portraits. Appendix: list of works copied by Sargent in the Prado as given in the Libros de copistas for 1879; current details of Sargent's copies.
