Abstract (en)
Uses the less well-known Slow Fall (1961; Los Angeles, Museum of Contemporary Art) as an alternative point of departure in looking at Rauschenberg's Combines. Considers both formal composition and iconography while making connections between this work and such works as Small Rebus (1956; Los Angeles, Museum of Contemporary Art), Allegory (1959-1960; Cologne, Museum Ludwig), and Painting with Grey Wing (1959; Los Angeles, Museum of Contemporary Art). Identifies the theme of fantasies of flight and their frustration, considers the artist's engagement with mythology and allegory, and discusses various scholarly interpretations of Rauschenberg's work. Mentions the impact of the time he spent in Italy, 1952-1953.
