Reviews the exhibition The age of Watteau, Chardin and Fragonard: masterpieces of French genre painting (Ottawa, National Gallery of Canada; Washington, DC, National Gallery of Art, to 11 Jan 2004; Berlin, Gemäldegalerie, 8 Feb-9 May 2004); 29 artists were represented and the paintings ranged from domestic scenes to fête galantes. The accompanying catalogue is discussed in terms of its contribution to the study of ancien régime art.
