Abstract
(en)
Catalogue essays include contributions on the work and legacy of the geologist and vulcanologist Henry James Johnston-Lavis, and on his collection of books, specimens, paintings, engravings, and geological maps. Further essays discuss art, science, and tourism in images of Vesuvius, and the aesthetics of sublime landscapes, and an appendix publishes scientific papers on works in Johnston-Lavis's collection: analyses of the pigments of five gouaches of Mount Vesuvius dating to the late 18th and early 19th cs., and on the conservation of 26 photographs.
