Abstract (en)
An analysis of the changes in tables of contents and descriptive methods in 19th-c. handbooks of civil architecture by Dutch authors, covering the complete range of different practical and theoretical descriptive levels of architecture, sheds light on changes in architectural theory. From the 1840s onwards, influenced by recent discoveries in mechanics, statics, and geology, knowledge based on practical experience became discredited and the value of visual perception of outward appearance as a source of reliable theoretical knowledge was dismissed in favor of quantitive analysis of processes invisible to the naked eye.
