Abstract
(en)
The west doorway of Rochester cathedral has generally been considered to be a curiously English mixture of French styles, combining the radiating voussoirs and many of the motifs of Aquitainian portals with the Christ in Majesty iconography and column figures of the Île-de-France. Earlier studies have concentrated on stylistic features of the carving, but an examination of its structure reveals that an elaborate composition of the 1140s was deliberately modified some 20 years later in response to avant-garde changes in French portal design.
