France, focusing on king Philippe II Auguste's use of fortifications in the Centre and Ile-de-France regions to support his expansionist goals. Deals with the question of how "Gothic" fortified castles really were. Examines plans of fortifications such as the donjon of Château-Gaillard (Dourdan).
