Klein was one of the seminal artists of the 20th c., and his work remains as controversial as it was when he created it. His impulse to free art from its material limits, and experimentation with the elements (fire, air, water) in body and performance art, architecture, and urbanism was propelled by a utopistic desire to create a new social system based on cosmic laws. His innovative influence continues to be felt in the avant-garde, and can be seen in the work of international contemporary artists like Anish Kapoor, Susan Hiller, Sherrie Levine, and Mike Bidlo.
