Abstract (en)
Outlines Pillement's career as court painter (noting that on multiple projects, the Frenchman was not the socio-politically-minded king's first choice of artist). Considers iconographic and stylistic sources for and influences on his work, including: monograms, the "writing cabinet" in the king's private apartments, chinoiserie screens and wall panels of the halls of the Ujazdów Castle, and pastoral and marine landscapes for the Knight's Hall and bedrooms of the Royal Castle. Also discusses his nationalistic images of Polish history, poetry, and royalty. Includes sketches and correspondence between Pillement and other artists with the king.
