Abstract (en)
Provides an overview of Naples's architectural history from the rule of the Austrian Habsburgs to the Spanish Bourbons. Notes the influence of conservative government policies, the provisional nature of urban sprawl and infrastructure, and civic practices such as festivals. Focuses on tradition and innovation in churches and palaces by Arcangelo and Marcello Guglielmelli, Giovan Battista and Muzio Nauclerio, Antonio Vaccaro, and Ferdinando Sanfelice. Also discusses the reign of Charles VII Bourbon and his patronage of Roman architects Ferdinando Fuga (especially the Albergo dei Poveri) and Luigi Vanvitelli, as well as the temporary regency necessitated by the youth of successor Ferninand IV, who later sponsored many significant urban projects such the planning of the city's two main piazze.
