Abstract
(en)
Asserts Paris's role in Man Ray's artistic life, as he was able to attend shows, co-exhibit, photograph, and otherwise develop relationships with European and American avant-garde poets, writers, and painters. Stresses that while his success was not dependent on this culture, Man Ray thrived in this intellectual environment of constant ideological exploration. Notes the influence of and his perceptions of New York, especially following the Armory Show (which preceded his move Paris in 1921). Also considers his reception of and among American art critics, his role in dada and surrealism, and the two cities as art capitals after World War II.
