Abstract
(en)
Explores the function of photography in contemporary society, suggesting that its role in mediating reality has become antagonistic (with respect to subject and artistic identity). Describes its development as a representational "language" with the rise of mass media communications in the 1980s and the divergence between American and German methodologies. Emphasizes the integration of new technology into technique and imagery, tracing the evolution from manipulation to victimization of content (often being the body and, sometimes only implicitly, the artist).
