Abstract (en)
Provides a re-evaluation of the history of the Oratory of S. Maria della Spina through consideration of new documentary evidence, stipulations of height, estimated placement within the city, acquisition of its relic, iconographical consistency, style, and comparison with the Campo Santo tabernacle. Proposes the original Trecento reconstruction (rather than its Ottocento dismantling and its resulting "patchwork" exterior) as a quintessentially gothic Pisan masterpiece and tries to develop more precise dates and authorship of its exterior sculpture. Suggests that many tentative attributions to Pisano's workshop were "spoils" (originally produced at least in the master's presence), reused, perhaps, by replacement sculptor Lupo di Francesco, noting differences in quality. Focuses on Christic and Marian scenes on the western and southern façades, which the author estimates were added after reconstruction began in 1323 but not long after the relic's arrival in 1333.
