Comments on the role of androgyny in Frida Kahlo's works, arguing that her frequently masculine attributes in her self-portraits indicate her desire to transcend what she felt to be limiting gender boundaries. Suggests similar references to the female assumption of male traits in Mexican culture, such as in the writings of Octavio Paz, especially in his description of the Virgin of Guadalupe.
