Abstract (en)
Analyzes the Latino community of east Los Angeles to show how Latinos have shaped American urban spaces, particularly the distinctive practice of utilizing outdoor space such as streets and yards for social and familial interaction. Explains that activity in the spaces surrounding houses prevents the isolation experienced by most Los Angeles residents and compiles a list of salient features of this urban quarter, noting how users have adapted original features to meet their daily needs. Highlights the blends of Mexican and American forms as well as private and public areas created by porches, fences, props (including street art), and street vendors. Advocates looking at the multi-cultural, socially-stratified city as a model for "new urbanism" in design and practice.
