Abstract (en)
Examines how American healthcare (as well as convenience, alimentary, and automotive) practices have shaped urban architecture, focusing on the combination of medical stores and services with non-medical establishments. Describes the growth of mini-malls, small shopping centers, and isolated street retailers near medical centers (rather than the quintessential tall medical buildings) through a survey of buildings in Los Angeles.
