Abstract (en)
Looks at mostly mid-19th-early 20th-c. "bird's-eye" views of New Orleans, focusing on the representation of the city's staggering expansion, geographical features, streets, quarters, important architectural structures, a handful of topographical artists, and the impact of the Mississippi River. Notes that, as comprehensiveness of prints (placement of content on a single page) was paramount, distortion and interpretation often trumped accuracy. Also describes the development of photographic views taken from skyscrapers and eventually airplanes.
