Abstract (en)
Chronicles the historical and social circumstances of the establishment of Germany as a single nation in the late 19th c., focusing on the development of a national cultural identity via increased communication, the role of the reinterpretation of the German Middle Ages, and the memory of Martin Luther and the Reformation. Examines the ways in which national sentiments inflected 19th-c. art (history painting), monuments and architecture, and music, specifically the frequent occurence of the dictum "Männer machen die Geschichte".
