Abstract (en)
Discusses the treatment by American painters of the Civil War and contrasts it with that of the popular and satirical press. Paintings by David Gilmour Blythe are presented as unique in that he directly addressed the corruption and violence of the war, using imagery from popular cartoons to give visual form to these realities.
