Abstract
(en)
Studies the iconography, sources, and dating of the mural painting SS. Peter and Paul in the bema of the rock-cut church of S. Lorenzo near Fasano. On the basis of a stylistic and comparative analysis, supports a dating of the late 13th c. for the work. Explores the history of the cult of the two saints, and their paired (face-to face) representation in Early Christian, Byzantine and medieval art in various media. Connects the saints' image in S. Lorenzo with a tradition for representing the Deesis with SS. Peter and Paul as intercessors in apse decoration of rock-cut churches in Cappadocia and Georgia. Suggests that the specific placement of the two saints in the program of S. Lorenzo represents a subtle shift in their role to that of bema guardians. Also discusses the significance of the image of S. Nicholas in the S. Lorenzo program, and the 13th-c. link of Nicholas' cult to the interests of the Serbian dynasty.
