Abstract (en)
Outlines the history of the 4th-16th-c. architectural development of the Vatican in its urban context. Focuses on 15th-16th-c. papal projects for the renovation and fortification of the Vatican Borgo and Castel S. Angelo, and the subsequent urbanistic separation (begun under pope Nicholas V) of the Vatican from the rest of the city. Also summarizes the 15th-early 16th-c. architectural history of the papal residence (Vatican Palace) and the Sistine Chapel, and surveys the late 15th-mid-16th-c. architectural history of the basilica of S. Peter's.
