Abstract (en)
Traces the history and 12th-20th-c. construction and alteration phases of the Cesarini family's palace (now the Istituto centrale di restauro) in Rome. Studies the iconography, sources, and patronage of 16th-c. mural painting in the Sala dello Zodiaco and the Sala della Loggia. The first cycle is astrological (related to the Cesarini patron), while the second shows episodes of Roman history. Identifies the patron as cardinal Alessandro Cesarini, and the prototype of the astrological fresco as the ceiling (by Perino del Vaga and Giovanni da Udine; patron: pope Leo X) of the Sala dei Pontefici in the Borgia Apartment in the Vatican Palace, Rome. Argues that the painter of the late 16th-c. ceiling in the Sala della Loggia was an artist close to Giacomo Bertoia and Raffaellino da Reggio, and that the work dates ca.1570-1574. Also includes a study of the Cesarini's 15th-16th-c. collection of Roman sculpture and inscriptions that were displayed in the palace garden.
