Abstract
(en)
On the episodes and characters from Tasso's epic poem Gerusalemme liberata selected for depiction in late 16th-18th-c. European mural and canvas paintings, tapestry, manuscript illustration, and illustration. Observes that Domenico Tintoretto's Tancred Baptizing Clorinda (Houston, Museum of Fine Arts) may be the first painting of a subject from the Gerusalemme liberata after its 1581 publication. Examines the subjects from the poem used by 17th-c. artists like Nicholas Poussin, Charles Alfonse Dufresnoy, and Guercino to explore the depiction of emotional states. Observes that there was a hiatus in interest in Tasso subjects between the 1640s and ca.1700, after which new series of illustrations by Antonio Tempesta and Giovanni Battista Piazzetta inspired several large-scale cycles by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, Giovanni Antonio Guardi, and others.
