Surveys the 12th-17th-c. architectural and urban history of Genoa, focusing on the organization of commercial architecture on the waterfront, harbor and city, and on merchants' residences. Describes the late 13th-14th-c. history of the Palazzo del mare (patron: Guglielmo Boccanegra; now part of the Palazzo S. Giorgio), constructed to house the office of the harbor authorities and customhouse.
