Abstract
(en)
Examines the theoretical treatment of proportion, measurement, and geometry in the first volume (1567) of L'Orme's architectural treatise, in light of the title ("Des divines proportions & mesures de l'ancienne & premiere architecture des peres du vieil testament, accomodées à l'architecture moderne") of his projected, but never completed, second volume. Discusses his declared intention to demonstrate mathematical proportion as the universal principle governing beauty and his application of this principle to architecture, exploring the Neoplatonic elements in his proportional theory and pointing to his evident knowledge of the work of Luca Pacioli.
