Abstract (en)
Explores the 15th-c. evolution of architectural terminology in the Italian language. Observes that after the mid-15th c., this development depended chiefly on the systematic translation and interpretation of Vitruvius's treatise De architectura, and that terms derived from this source became the basis for a national and international language of architecture. Focuses on Francesco di Giorgio Martini's translation (and exegesis) of Vitruvius, interpretative methodology, and assimilation of Vitruvian terminology in his own writings. As a case study, traces Martini's analysis and presentation of the Ionic Order in the various phases of his treatise, and his method of derivation from Vitruvius' text. Distinguishes Martini's approach to Vitruvius from that of Filarete, who knew and cited the ancient writer, but considered him as one among many authoritative voices.
