Abstract
(en)
Examines the history of the cult of the Madonna centered on the miraculous image Madonna and Child in the church of S. Maria dell'Impruneta, Impruneta, and the diffusion of the image in prints and ex-votos. Since this Madonna panel was kept hidden from public view, no single model for the image was codified until the mid-18th c., when the painting underwent restoration. Defines the two visual types (and their variants and updates) used until the mid-18th c. to represent the Impruneta Madonna, and presents eight catalogue entries for mid-18th-early 20th-c. terra cotta plaques with the codified image. Also includes an entry for the mid-14th-c. painted tabernacle used to carry the Madonna in processions. (The works are in the Museo del tesoro, Impruneta.)
