Abstract
(en)
Discusses the use of rhetoric in Samuel van Hoogstraten's treatise Inleyding tot de hooge schoole der schilderkonst (1678), focusing on three terms used in relation to Rembrandt's painting: "affectus" (referring to the depiction of the passions), "enargeia", and "ornatus" (used for his use of color and light).
