Abstract
(en)
Discusses various instances of a nostalgic mood of recall in Romantic painting (such as Friedrich's landscape paintings with prominent figures seen from the back, and Constable's evocations of childhood response in his landscape paintings), and poetry by Coleridge, Wordsworth, and Keats, arguing that they are a kind of secularized version of earlier Christian meditative traditions.
