Abstract (en)
Discusses the iconography and symbolism of the 13th-c. facade of the upper church of S. Francesco in Assisi, and its architectural elements (including the double doors and the rose window), and its sculpture, particularly the symbols of the four evangelists around the rose window, and the animal imagery of the stringcourse. Argues that the theological purpose and unity of the facade's design functions as an introduction to the operative Scriptural hermeneutic among the frescoed narratives in the interior.
