Fifth in a series of regular touring exhibitions of paintings from the collections of the National Gallery, London. Introductory essay provides a context for the selected artists and works by describing the allure of Rome for foreign painters, especially Flemish, Dutch and French artists, in the 17th c. Examines the reasons why pure landscape painting rose to eminence in Rome during the 17th c. Artists represented include Adam Elsheimer, Jan Both, Nicolaes Berchem, Frédéric de Moucheron, Claude Lorrain and Nicolas Poussin. Catalogue entries with explanatory texts and reproductions of each object. Exhibition also shown in Doncaster and Bath. (Staff, RILA, UK)
